Roald Dahl Plass

Roald Dahl Plass, located in the heart of Cardiff Bay, is a must-visit destination for both fans of literature and admirers of modern urban design. Named after one of the world’s most beloved children’s authors, Roald Dahl – who was born in Llandaff, Cardiff – this public plaza offers an array of attractions that make it a focal point for visitors to Wales’ capital city.

The History

Originally known as the Oval Basin due to its unique shape, this area was once part of Cardiff Docks – one of the busiest ports in the world during the 19th century. The docks played a crucial role in facilitating global trade with exports primarily consisting of coal from South Wales Valleys. However, by mid-20th century decline set in and by 1980s much like many other British docks it had become largely derelict.

In an effort to rejuvenate this historic site, redevelopment work began on what would be later named ‘Roald Dahl Plass’ as part of a larger project called ‘Cardiff Bay Development’. Officially opened on April 1st 2000 by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and Duke Of Edinburgh Prince Philip, Roald Dahl Plass became not just symbolically but also physically central to new life breathed into Cardiff Bay area.

The Design

Roald Dahl Plass was designed by architect William Pye along with Nicholas Hare Architects. It features a large elliptical open space reflecting its history as ‘The Oval Basin’. One end is completely open towards Mermaid Quay offering beautiful views across water while at another stands iconic Water Tower which has since become synonymous with location itself.

A key feature within Roald Dahl Plass is undoubtedly William Pye’s water sculpture titled ‘Water Tower’. This cylindrical steel structure standing at 70 feet tall, continuously overflows with water running down its sides creating a mesmerizing mirror effect. It is particularly striking when illuminated in evenings.

The Name

Renamed as Roald Dahl Plass in 2002 to mark centenary of author’s birth, ‘Plass’ means ‘place’ or ‘square’ in Norwegian – a nod to Dahl’s Norwegian heritage from his parents’ side. Roald Dahl, though born and initially raised in Cardiff had strong connections with Norway and often spent summers there during his childhood which he later described as ‘utterly idyllic’.
