Obere Pfarre

Welcome to our travel guide for one of the most enchanting cities in Germany, Bamberg. This UNESCO World Heritage site is famous for its well-preserved medieval architecture and charming old town. But among all the treasures that this city has to offer, there’s a hidden gem that stands out: The Obere Pfarre (Upper Parish).

The History of Obere Pfarre

Obere Pfarre, also known as St. Martin’s Church or Upper Parish Church, is an impressive Gothic church located in the heart of Bamberg’s old town. It was founded in 1185 by Bishop Otto II after a fire destroyed much of the city including the predecessor building on this site.

However, it took several centuries until 1387 when construction began on what we now know as Obere Pfarre under Bishop Lamprecht von Brunn. Despite his death during its construction, work continued and finally completed around 1520.

The Architecture

The architectural style of Obere Pfarre is predominantly late Gothic with some elements from earlier periods remaining visible such as Romanesque windows on its east side. Its exterior features include a soaring spire reaching up to approximately 81 meters high making it one of Bamberg’s tallest buildings.

The interior design showcases beautiful vaulted ceilings adorned with frescoes depicting biblical scenes like ‘The Last Judgement’, which were added between 1475 and 1500 by Hans Seyferth and other artists from Nuremberg.

A Masterpiece Inside

One cannot discuss about Obere Pfarre without mentioning its crowning glory – The Maria Immaculata Altarpiece made by Veit Stoss who also created Krakow’s famous altarpiece at St Mary’s Basilica. This exquisite piece of art, made from linden wood and painted with tempera, depicts the Virgin Mary surrounded by angels and saints.

The altarpiece was commissioned in 1520 by Bishop Georg Schenk von Limpurg who wanted to commemorate his parents. It is considered one of the finest examples of late Gothic sculpture in Germany.

Stunning Views

Obere Pfarre not only offers a spiritual experience but also provides visitors with an opportunity to enjoy panoramic views over Bamberg’s old town. The church stands on a hill overlooking the city which makes it an ideal spot for photography enthusiasts or anyone wanting to soak up some breathtaking scenery.

Visiting Obere Pfarre

The church is open to visitors throughout the year except during religious services so you can explore its architectural beauty at your leisure. There’s no entrance fee but donations are always appreciated as they contribute towards maintenance costs.

If you’re visiting Bamberg, make sure that Obere Pfarre features on your itinerary. Its historic charm coupled with stunning views will definitely leave you enchanted!
