Musée Ariana

If you are a lover of ceramics and glassware, or simply someone who appreciates the beauty of fine artistry, then the Musée Ariana in Geneva should be at the top of your list when visiting Switzerland. This museum is home to an extensive collection of ceramic and glass creations that span seven centuries and three continents.

History

The Musée Ariana, also known as the Swiss Museum for Ceramics and Glass (Musée suisse de la céramique et du verre), was built between 1877-1884 by Gustave Revilliod. He was a passionate collector with a deep love for travel, arts, natural sciences, history and more. The museum is named after his mother Ariane De La Rive.

Gustave Revilliod intended this grand building to house not just his collections but also serve as his residence. Upon his death in 1890 he bequeathed it all – property along with its collections – to the city of Geneva under two conditions: first being that the place will always remain open to public; secondly it must retain its name ‘Ariana’.

Architecture

The architecture alone makes this museum worthy of a visit! Designed by local architect John Camoletti in neo-classical style with Byzantine influence, it’s an architectural masterpiece that stands out from its surroundings. Its imposing façade adorned with intricate sculptures offers visitors their first taste of what lies within – an elegant blend of artistry both inside and outside.
The interior is equally magnificent featuring beautifully decorated rooms filled with natural light streaming through stained-glass windows casting multicoloured reflections on polished wood floors.

Collections

The Musée Ariana boasts over 20,000 objects spanning from Middle Ages right up until today showcasing works from Europe, the Middle East and Far East. This vast collection includes pottery, porcelain, stoneware and glassware. The museum’s aim is to provide a comprehensive overview of the history of ceramic arts.

Within its extensive collection are remarkable pieces such as Italian majolica from Renaissance period; Chinese ceramics dating back to Ming Dynasty; Islamic glasswork showcasing intricate designs; European porcelain from famous manufacturers like Meissen, Sèvres or Royal Copenhagen.

Exhibitions

The museum regularly hosts temporary exhibitions featuring works by contemporary artists alongside their permanent collections. These exhibitions often focus on specific themes or techniques providing an in-depth exploration into different aspects of ceramic and glass artistry.
