The square was first established in 1274 when it served as a marketplace where merchants could sell their goods. It has since become one of the most beloved spots in town with its stunning architecture, colourful buildings, and vibrant atmosphere. The cobblestone streets that surround the square are lined with shops selling everything from handmade crafts to local delicacies like pretzels and bratwurst. There is also a weekly farmers’ market held on Saturdays offering fresh produce from local farms as well as speciality items such as cheeses, sausages, breads, pastries and more.
At the centre of Market Square stands an impressive fountain known as “Der Meistertrunk” which dates back to 1608 when it was erected by Mayor Nusch to commemorate his victory over Swedish forces during the Thirty Years War. The statue depicts him drinking from an oversized tankard while standing atop a lion – symbolizing courage and strength – surrounded by four figures representing justice, peace, faithfulness, and loyalty.
On special occasions throughout the year such as Christmas or Easter celebrations there are festivities held here including parades featuring traditional costumes along with live music performances by bands playing folk tunes from across Europe. Visitors can also find many restaurants located around Marktplatz serving up classic German dishes like schnitzel or potato pancakes alongside regional wines for those looking to enjoy a leisurely meal outdoors under twinkling lights strung between trees above them.
During summer months you may even stumble upon outdoor film screenings set up on large screens at one end of Market Square, making this spot great for people watching too.
