Located in Nuremberg’s main square since 1385, it has become an integral part of the city’s identity.
The fountain was built on orders from Emperor Charles IV as a symbol of his gratitude for his coronation at Aachen Cathedral. It was designed by Heinrich Beheim and consists of three tiers with fourteen figures depicting various virtues such as faith, justice, strength, and temperance. The top tier features an angel holding a crown above Charles IV’s head while he kneels before her feet.
Legend has it that if you turn the wheel located beneath the fountain three times while making a wish, your wish will come true. This tradition dates back to the 15th century when locals would make wishes for good health or prosperity during hard times; however, today people still flock to the site to make their wishes come true.
The beautiful fountain also serves as home to many events throughout its long history, including jousting tournaments and public executions. In 1632 Gustavus Adolphus held his victory celebrations here after defeating Wallenstein at Lützen during the Thirty Years War. Today, it remains an important gathering spot for both locals and tourists alike, who gather around its base each year to celebrate Fasching (Carnival) festivities or watch performances by local musicians on summer evenings.
In addition to being a popular tourist attraction, Schöner Brunnen is also considered one of Germany’s oldest monuments – having survived wars, natural disasters and time itself without ever losing its beauty or charm.
